Hello World!

Massive blister on my thumb from rubbing gunk off my trunk left by the M3 badge.

I wasn't real happy with the double-sided tape that came on the monochrome M3 badge I bought...it was yellow and visible even after I filled in the edges with black sharpie so it made it look cheap to me. I got tired of looking at it and noticing it every time so I finally took it off today.

The cheap part (which wasn't cheap, actually) left me a little present on my thumb. The adhesive might have been ugly, but it sure was strong. I'm just glad it didn't damage my paint. It's nice and smooth now :D

Yamaha Creates Acoustic Design for Engine of the Lexus LFA Super Sports Car (via @chriscasper)

Check out the story by Yamaha and have a listen. It sounds amazing! Also, here's some more pics of the LFA to accompany the acoustics story (thanks for the heads-up @chriscaper).

Timeless Typography. A comparison of Coke vs Pepsi logos over the years.

I thought this was an interesting comparison though it doesn’t exactly tell the whole story. I believe there were some Coke redesigns in the middle, but they’ve always been subtle or for specific product lines (like Diet Coke). However, the point is, the original corporate mark has remained largely unchanged for 124 years. Now, that’s timeless typography.

My Time Capsule shipped from China, to Alaska, to Oakland...to Memphis? O_o

This is odd...why wouldn't they just send it from NoCal down to SoCal instead of sending it off to Tennessee?

Shameless self promotion: Proud to be included again in 2nd Edition of Designing A Digital Portfolio.

Back in 2003 I was contacted by author, Cynthia Baron to have my old portfolio site included in her book, Designing A Digital Portfolio. 6 years later, the second edition is out and she has included the updated version of my site again with a pretty nice and in-depth (and accurate) writeup. I’m pleasantly surprised at some of the insight she had without some of the topics being discussed in the interview.

I just received my complimentary copy in the mail today so here are a few shots of my pages. Sorry for the fuzzy iPhone pics.

Some very compelling stats about the exponential growth of the Internet. (AKA “Did You Know 2009 Edition”)

This is kind of a re-hash of some other videos but contains some really interesting tidbits anyways.

Did you know 2.0 (2008 Edition) | Did you know 3.0 (2008 Edition)

And another one that made the rounds known as “Social Media Revolution”:

Example of Mobile Photoshop vs The Best Camera App.

Here’s a little test of a shot I took of the boy at Cars & Coffee last Saturday:

  • First shot is edited with Mobile Photoshop
  • Second shot is edited with The Best Camera App
  • Third shot is the original

I prefer the fine control of Mobile Photoshop but wish it had the ability to do a shadow vignette in addition to the soft vignette. You can clearly see the highlight detail better in the Mobile PS version. My biggest complaint with The Best Camera App has always been the highlights get blown out but I do love the simplicity of it.

Proof that facial recognition in iPhoto is a bust.

Faces in iPhoto is a really cool idea and it HAS actually worked a little bit for me on occasion, but it’s clearly not working on this specific photo library for some reason. I don’t think it’s actually doing anything at all other than just pulling any face it senses into this “Kyle may also be in the photos below” list. This was definitely not the behavior I experienced on another iPhoto library (using the same computer) so I really don’t know why it’s doing this now.

I can understand it having a hard time distinguishing between all of my kids faces since they do sort of look alike, but...

The boy does not look anything like Patrick from Sponge Bob…

Or Sailor Mercury…

Or his grandpa...

Let alone a bunch of other girls. There are several other images pulled into this set: A multitude of adults with with blonde or brown hair (or no hair at all), other kids from his soccer and flag football teams (both boys and girls of varying ethnicities), and even some of statues and other inanimate objects. It’s basically not doing anything at all.

What kills me is the other library that Faces works on is much bigger. Over 11k photos vs 5k. The only difference between the two is the resolution of the images and the source camera. The larger library is shot with various small point-and-shoots while the smaller library (the one that doesn’t work) is shot with a digital SLR (canon digital rebel). And, Faces takes FOREVER on the smaller library to pull the “may also be in” photos whereas the larger library is almost instant. Something just seems wrong with this equation.

Nice work, Apple. I love your company and pretty much all of your products, but this is just not worth the time to even bother using.

Testing out the “Best Camera” app on iPhone. I think I like it.

Here are some before and after pics using the Best Camera iPhone app by Chase Jarvis on some of my old iPhone photos. This seems to be a pretty nice simple post processing app that can sweeten iPhone photos without transferring them to your computer. Doesn't go too far with the effects like most do and you have the ability to modify the various filters in a non-destructive way...well, at least it's non-destructive before you save it.

I wish there was more control over highlights and shadows since some of these have gotten more blown out than I'd like, but in general, this app does a pretty good job. Not surprising since this was developed by a photographer.

Thanks, @holleyimage for letting me know about this.

Lovin’ the new Flickr iPhone app.

Beautiful design. Simple, functional interface. Great typography. If only all iPhone apps followed those three simple rules.

It sure took them a long time to finally come out with an iPhone app, but it's *almost* worth the wait. Klick was my favorite Flickr iPhone app before and I have a feeling it will be replaced by this pretty soon. If only it could do support multiple accounts like Mobile Fotos does.

Take a look at the last screen shot. I got a kick out of the “funny face” the icon makes while downloading, heheh o_o
